Welsh author Howard Marks, who died in 2016, is best known for Mr Nice, his account of his career as an international cannabis smuggler. The 1996 autobiography recounts the court cases that ended in a 25-year sentence, of which he served seven years before his release in 1995. After prison he campaigned publicly for changes to drugs legislation, and he also wrote The Most Important Thing, a collection of essays on economics.
