British writer Ian Fleming was best known for his James Bond spy novels, which began with Casino Royale in 1952 and continued with titles such as Goldfinger, Moonraker and Live and Let Die. Before the series he had worked as a journalist, and during the Second World War he served in Britain's Naval Intelligence Division, experience that shaped the background of the novels. He also wrote the children's story Chitty-Chitty-Bang-Bang, published in 1964, the year he died at 56.
