Ian Rankin is a Scottish crime writer and philanthropist, best known for his Inspector Rebus novels, which began with Knots and Crosses in 1987. Born in Fife in 1960, he was the first of his family to attend university and worked a number of jobs before becoming a writer. His crime fiction is a major part of the tartan noir genre, and the Rebus books have sold over 35 million copies. Later entries include A Question of Blood, the fourteenth novel in the series.
