Iris Murdoch was an Irish and British novelist and philosopher, best known for novels about good and evil, sexual relationships, and morality. Her first novel, Under the Net (1954), was followed by The Bell (1958) and A Severed Head (1961), and her 1978 novel The Sea, The Sea won the Booker Prize. She also wrote philosophy, most notably The Sovereignty of Good (1970), and was married to the literary critic John Bayley until her death in 1999.
