Ivan Goncharov was a Russian novelist best known for Oblomov (1859), along with The Same Old Story (1847), which also appears as A Common Story, and The Precipice (1869). Born in Simbirsk in 1812, he served in many official capacities, including as a censor, and also wrote literary and theatre criticism. He died in 1891, and his memoir An Uncommon Story was not published until 1924.
