James Gordon Farrell (1935–1979) was an English-born novelist of Irish descent, best known for the Empire Trilogy: Troubles, The Siege of Krishnapur and Singapore Grip, novels about the political and human costs of British colonial rule. Troubles won the 1971 Geoffrey Faber Memorial Prize and was retrospectively given the Lost Man Booker Prize in 2010, while The Siege of Krishnapur, set during the 1857 Indian Rebellion, won the 1973 Booker Prize. Farrell's books remain the core of his work, with the trilogy running through each of them.
