John Ronald Reuel Tolkien was an English writer and academic philologist, best known for the fantasy novels The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, both set in the invented world of Middle-earth. He was a scholar of Anglo-Saxon and the English language at the University of Oxford. After he died in 1973, his son Christopher published further works drawn from his father's notes and manuscripts, including The Silmarillion and The Children of Húrin. He is often called the father of modern fantasy.
