James Baldwin (1924–1987) was an American writer and civil rights activist who wrote novels, essays, plays and poems. His 1953 novel Go Tell It on the Mountain and his 1956 novel Giovanni's Room follow characters searching for self and social acceptance, while his 1955 essay collection Notes of a Native Son made his name as a voice for human equality. He also wrote If Beale Street Could Talk, published in 1974, and his unfinished manuscript Remember This House became the documentary I Am Not Your Negro.
