James Clavell, known as James Clavell and born Charles Edmund Dumaresq Clavell, was an English and American writer, filmmaker and British Army officer, best known for his Asian Saga novels, including Shogun, King Rat, Tai-Pan and Noble House. Shogun follows an English navigator shipwrecked in feudal Japan, and several of his novels were later adapted for television and film. He also wrote the screenplays for The Fly and The Great Escape and directed To Sir, with Love. Clavell was a prisoner of war at Changi Prison, an experience that formed the basis of King Rat, and he died in 1994.
