James Kelman is a Scottish novelist, short story writer, playwright and essayist who writes mostly about working-class life in Glasgow. His novels A Disaffection and How Late It Was, How Late, which won the 1994 Booker Prize, are told from inside the minds of working-class narrators struggling with authority and the people around them. He is also the author of The Busconductor Hines and Kieron Smith, Boy, which won both of Scotland's main literary awards in 2008.
