James Lovelock was an English independent scientist, environmentalist and futurist who was best known for proposing the Gaia hypothesis, the idea that Earth works as a self-regulating system. His books on that theory include The Ages of Gaia and We Belong to Gaia, and he invented the electron capture detector, which helped him detect chlorofluorocarbons spread through the atmosphere. Earlier in his career he ran cryopreservation experiments on rodents, and he worked for MI5 for decades.
