James P. Womack is the author of Lean Thinking and The Machine That Changed the World, two books on business, economics and history. He was research director of the International Motor Vehicle Program at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and he founded the Lean Enterprise Institute, a nonprofit devoted to spreading and developing Lean thinking. Womack's work centers on the Lean approach to running an enterprise.
