James Payn (1830–1898) was an English novelist and editor, known for novels such as Lost Sir Massingberd, The Canon's Ward, By Proxy and A Perfect Treasure, and for historical fiction like In Peril and Privation. Payn also edited two periodicals, Chambers's Journal in Edinburgh and the Cornhill Magazine in London. Other books under the name include Walter's Word, which includes short stories, and Some Private Views.
