James Ransome is an American illustrator of more than 60 children's books. Born in North Carolina in 1961, he moved with his family to Bergenfield, New Jersey, during high school, then earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts at Pratt Institute, where he studied under Jerry Pinkney. He has been commissioned for three murals at the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center in Cincinnati, Ohio, and teaches at Syracuse University. He lives in Rhinebeck, New York, with his wife, the author Lesa Cline-Ransome.
