James Salter was the pen name of James Arnold Horowitz, an American novelist and short-story writer who died in 2015. He was a career Air Force officer and pilot until he resigned in 1957, after his first novel, The Hunters, was published. He also worked in film writing and directing, but he is best known for his fiction, including Solo Faces, A Sport and a Pastime, All That Is and Light Years, which are literary fiction often concerned with coming of age. He won numerous literary awards for his work.
