Jane Austen (1775–1817) was an English writer known for six novels that examine the landed gentry of late eighteenth-century England and the pressure on women to marry for security. She published Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice, Mansfield Park and Emma anonymously, and Northanger Abbey and Persuasion appeared in 1817, the year she died, while Sanditon was left unfinished. Her novels have been adapted many times for film and television, and critics have written extensively about her wit and social observation.
