Jean-Paul Sartre was a French philosopher, political activist and writer, and one of the key figures of existentialism. He was best known for Being and Nothingness, his principal philosophical work, and for Existentialism Is a Humanism, an introduction to his philosophy first given as a lecture. His fiction includes the short-story collection The Wall and the play No Exit. He was awarded the 1964 Nobel Prize in Literature, though he tried to refuse it.
