John Berger (1926–2017) was an English art critic, novelist, painter and poet who lived in France for over fifty years. He was best known for Ways of Seeing, essays on art and images written to accompany a BBC television series, which continue to be widely read. His novel G. won the 1972 Booker Prize, and his other books include Red Tenda of Bologna and Steps Towards a Small Theory of the Visible.
