John Fowles (1926–2005) was an English novelist whose work sits between modernism and postmodernism, shaped by Jean-Paul Sartre and Albert Camus. His novel The Magus (1965) grew out of his years teaching English on the Greek island of Spetses. The French Lieutenant's Woman (1969) is a Victorian-set romance with a postmodern twist, and he lived for much of his life in Lyme Regis, Dorset, the town where it is set. His other novels include The Collector, Daniel Martin, and A Maggot.
