John McWhorter is an American linguist and associate professor of linguistics at Columbia University, where he also teaches American studies and music history. His books include The Story of Human Language, a lecture series on how languages arise, change, and spread, and Woke Racism, a set of essays. He has also written on race relations and African-American culture, and is a political commentator, especially through his New York Times newsletter.
