John Milton was an English poet, pamphleteer and civil servant, best known for Paradise Lost, his 1667 epic in unrhymed verse across twelve books. The poem retells the fall of man, from Satan's temptation of Adam and Eve to their expulsion from the Garden of Eden. Milton also wrote Areopagitica (1644), a prose argument against censorship before publication, and served the Commonwealth of England under the Council of State and later under Oliver Cromwell.
