John Stuart Mill was an English philosopher, political economist and politician whose work centred on liberty and the limits of state and social control. He is best known for On Liberty (1859), which sets out the harm principle, and for Utilitarianism, his case for the ethics he took up from Jeremy Bentham. He also co-wrote The Subjection of Women (1869), an early feminist work, and was a Liberal Member of Parliament.
