John Updike (1932–2009) was an American novelist, poet, and short-story writer whose best-known work is the Rabbit series, which follows Harry "Rabbit" Angstrom from young adulthood to death. Both Rabbit Is Rich and Rabbit at Rest earned him the Pulitzer Prize, making him one of only four writers to win it more than once. His other novels include The Witches of Eastwick, about three restless women in a New England town who discover they have magic, and Couples. He wrote regularly for The New Yorker from 1954 onward.
