Jonathan Swift was an Irish satirist, essayist and Anglican cleric who became dean of St Patrick's Cathedral in Dublin. He is best known for Gulliver's Travels, a satirical novel that follows Lemuel Gulliver to Lilliput and other fantastical lands, and for A Modest Proposal, written in the deadpan irony that later became known as Swiftian. He also wrote A Tale of a Tub and published early work under pseudonyms such as Isaac Bickerstaff. Swift died in 1745.
