Jorge Amado was a Brazilian writer of the modernist school and remains the best known of modern Brazilian writers, with his work translated into some 49 languages. His novels, including Captains of the Sands, Tent of Miracles, Tieta and Dona Flor and Her Two Husbands, portray a cheerful, mixed-race Brazil marked by deep social and economic divides, and Dona Flor was adapted into a 1976 film. He held the 23rd chair of the Brazilian Academy of Letters from 1961 until his death in 2001, and from 1947 to 1951 he served as Federal Deputy for São Paulo as a member of the Brazilian Communist Party.
