Jorge Luis Borges was an Argentine writer of short stories, essays, poems and translations, best known for Ficciones and El Aleph, two collections from the 1940s that explore labyrinths, mirrors, chance and infinity. His fiction also appears in Collected Fictions and The Garden of Forking Paths, and The Book of Imaginary Beings gathers creatures from myth and folklore. He died in 1986, and his blend of philosophy and fantasy had a major influence on later Latin American writing.
