Joseph Campbell (1904–1987) was an American writer and professor of literature at Sarah Lawrence College, where he worked in comparative mythology and comparative religion. He was best known for The Hero with a Thousand Faces (1949), which traced a hero's journey that he argued recurs across world myths, a pattern he called the monomyth. His phrase "Follow your bliss" was often repeated, and George Lucas credited Campbell's work as an influence on the Star Wars saga. He also wrote The Power of Myth.
