Joseph Conrad, born Józef Teodor Konrad Korzeniowski in 1857, was a Polish-British novelist and story writer who did not speak English fluently until his twenties. His fiction, much of it set at sea and drawn from years in the French and British merchant navies, showed people tested by an indifferent world. His books include Lord Jim, Nostromo, The Secret Agent, and Heart of Darkness, whose sailor Marlow travels upriver into the Belgian Congo. He died in 1924.
