Judith Butler is an American philosopher and gender scholar whose work has shaped political philosophy, ethics, and feminist and queer theory. Butler is best known for Gender Trouble (1990) and Bodies That Matter (1993), which challenge conventional ideas of gender and develop the theory of gender performativity. Butler has taught at the University of California, Berkeley since 1993, and also wrote Giving an Account of Oneself.
