Jules Verne was a French novelist, poet, and playwright who lived from 1828 to 1905. He is best known for the Voyages extraordinaires, a series of adventure novels that includes Journey to the Center of the Earth, Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Seas, and Around the World in Eighty Days. Set mostly in the second half of the nineteenth century, his stories take contemporary science and new technology seriously, and he also wrote plays, short stories, and poetry.
