Julia Alvarez is an American poet, novelist, and essayist, best known for the novels How the García Girls Lost Their Accents and In the Time of the Butterflies. Born in New York in 1950, she spent her first decade in the Dominican Republic before her family fled to the United States, and that move shapes much of her writing on immigration and identity. She has also written poetry, including Homecoming, and children's books such as the Tía Lola series.
