Karen Hesse

Karen Hesse, born in 1952, writes American children's and young adult fiction, often set in the past. Her best-known book is Out of the Dust, a historical coming-of-age story that won the Newbery Medal in 1997. Night Job, a quieter literary novel about a school custodian's night shift, shows a gentler side of her work.
