Kyūsaku Yumeno was the pen name of Sugiyama Yasumichi, an early Shōwa period Japanese writer who was also a Zen priest, a post office director and a sub-lieutenant. Yumeno wrote detective novels with a strange, dreamlike streak, and the books published under this name include Dogra Magra, a gothic mystery with psychological horror elements, and The Edge of Ice, a detective story with a similar unsettling edge. Yumeno lived from 1889 to 1936, and the surreal, avant-garde narratives are what the name is best remembered for.
