Laurence van Cott Niven, known as Larry Niven, is an American science fiction writer best known for Ringworld, a 1970 novel that won the Hugo, Nebula, Locus, and Ditmar awards. He writes mostly hard science fiction built on big physical ideas, and he co-wrote The Mote in God's Eye and Lucifer's Hammer with Jerry Pournelle. His fantasy includes The Magic Goes Away series, which treats magic as a resource that can run out.
