Len Deighton, born in 1929, was a British author best known for his spy novels, though he also wrote cookery books and military history. His first novel, The IPCRESS File, was published in 1962 and began a run of spy books about a cynical, working-class intelligence officer. Among his later works were the Bernard Samson novels, such as Berlin Game, and the Game, Set and Match trilogy. He died in 2026.
