Lewis Thomas was an American physician and biologist who also wrote poetry and essays, and worked as an administrator, educator and policy advisor. He was a longtime contributor to The New England Journal of Medicine. His book The Lives of a Cell: Notes of a Biology Watcher gathers essays on biology, medicine and the natural world, and won a National Book Award. Thomas also wrote The Youngest Science, a memoir that mixes personal reflection with science.
