Louisa May Alcott was an American novelist, short story writer, and poet best known for Little Women (1868) and its sequels Good Wives (1869), Little Men (1871), and Jo's Boys (1886). Her critical success began with Hospital Sketches, drawn from her time as a nurse in the American Civil War, and early on she wrote lurid sensation novels under the pen name A. M. Barnard. Her other books include An Old-Fashioned Girl and Eight Cousins. Alcott died in Boston in 1888.
