Madeleine Albright was an American diplomat and political scientist who served as the 64th United States secretary of state under President Bill Clinton from 1997 to 2001, the first woman to hold the post. Born in Prague and brought to the United States as a child after the 1948 communist coup, she later wrote Prague Winter, a memoir and political history, and Fascism: A Warning, which looks at how fascist movements gain power and what threatens democratic institutions. Albright taught at Georgetown University and received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and she died in 2022.
