Manning Marable was a professor of public affairs, history and African-American Studies at Columbia University, where he founded and directed the Institute for Research in African-American Studies. He was best known for Malcolm X: A Life of Reinvention, a biography of the human rights activist that he had completed at the time of his death and that was posthumously awarded the 2012 Pulitzer Prize for History. He also wrote Living Black History and edited Let Nobody Turn Us Around with Leith Mullings, and he was active in numerous progressive political causes.
