Mario Vargas Llosa, born in Arequipa in 1936 and died in Lima in 2025, was a Peruvian novelist, journalist, essayist and politician. He rose to international attention in the 1960s with The Time of the Hero, The Green House and Conversation in the Cathedral, and later wrote The War at the End of the World and Aunt Julia and the Scriptwriter. He won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2010, and El Hablador follows a novelist drawn toward a man who keeps the myths of the Machiguenga people alive.
