Mary Higgins Clark was an American writer of suspense novels, known for titles such as Where Are the Children? and the Under Suspicion series she wrote with Alafair Burke. Her debut novel, a fictionalized life of George Washington, did not sell well, so she turned to mystery and suspense, and her books have sold more than 100 million copies in the United States alone. She died in 2020, and her daughter Carol Higgins Clark also wrote novels.
