Mary Westmacott was a pen name of Agatha Christie, the English writer known for her detective fiction, and under it she published six mainstream novels rather than the mysteries she was known for. Giant's Bread appeared in 1930, followed by books such as Absent in the Spring, in which a woman stranded by floods at a rest house looks back over her life. Unfinished Portrait and Daughter's a Daughter sit alongside them, and Rose and the Yew Tree brings in detection. Reviewers typically judged these books more kindly than her crime fiction.
