Maryse Condé was a French novelist, critic and playwright from Guadeloupe, and her teaching career took her to West Africa, North America, the Caribbean and Europe. She was best known for Ségou, and her writing explores the African diaspora that slavery and colonialism left in the Caribbean. Her other novels include The Belle Créole, a detective story with a noir edge, and The Gospel According to the New World, a coming-of-age novel with magical realist touches.
