Mercè Rodoreda

Mercè Rodoreda i Gurguí (1908–1983) was a Catalan novelist who wrote in the Catalan language, best known for La plaça del diamant, published in English as The Time of the Doves. Critics have called her the most important Catalan female novelist of the postwar period, and that novel has been translated into more than thirty languages. Her other books include Camellia Street and Death in Spring, and after her death another of her talents, painting, came to light, having taken a back seat while she devoted herself to writing.
