Mia Couto, born in 1955, is a Mozambican writer whose books include Confession of Lioness, The Last Flight of the Flamingo, The Tuner of Silences, Under the Frangipani and Voices Made Night. The Last Flight of the Flamingo is a historical novel, and Voices Made Night draws on magical realism. In 2013 Couto won the Camões Prize, the most important literary award in the Portuguese language, and in 2014 the Neustadt International Prize for Literature.
