Mircea Cărtărescu is a Romanian poet, prose writer, essayist and literary critic who also works as a journalist and teaches at the University of Bucharest. Born in Bucharest in 1956, he is among the most awarded Romanian writers of the post-communist period, and the Romanian Writers' Union twice proposed him for the Nobel Prize in Literature. He is best known for the ambitious Orbitor trilogy, the short-story collection De ce iubim femeile, and the novel Solenoid, a work of magical realism.
