Miriam Tlali was a South African novelist and one of the first writers to take up Soweto. Her 1975 novel Muriel at Metropolitan, later issued as Between Two Worlds, was the first English-language novel by a black woman published in South Africa. She followed it with Amandla, a 1980 novel about the 1976 Soweto Uprising, and the short story collection Soweto Stories in 1989. Most of her writing was banned under the apartheid regime, and she died in 2017.
