Mulk Raj Anand was an Indian writer in English who wrote about the lives of the poor in traditional Indian society. His protest novel Untouchable (1935) was followed by Coolie (1936) and Two Leaves and a Bud (1937), books that trace the hardship of working people in India. Anand was among the first writers to bring Punjabi and Hindustani idioms into English, and he received the Padma Bhushan, India's third-highest civilian honour. Born in 1905, he died in 2004.
