Noam Chomsky is an American linguist, philosopher, and political critic, often called the father of modern linguistics, whose work in that field began with Syntactic Structures. He also writes about power and public life, and his books on those subjects include Manufacturing Consent, written with Edward S. Herman, which examines how the US news media shapes what people see, and Hegemony or Survival, on American foreign policy. His classic writing on language is gathered in On Language, and Understanding Power brings together his essays on politics.
