Oğuz Atay was a Turkish novelist and engineer whose first novel, Tutunamayanlar, published in English as The Disconnected, appeared in 1971 and 1972. It was never reprinted in his lifetime and drew controversy among critics, but after a new edition in 1984 it became a best-seller, and critics have called it probably the most eminent novel of twentieth-century Turkish literature. Atay died in 1977, and The Disconnected remains the book he is best known for.
